Teen Therapy
In-person and online couples therapy for teens in Ohio
Is Your Teen In Need Of Support And Guidance?
● Does your teen struggle with stress, mood swings, feelings of overwhelm, or low self-esteem?
● Are they experiencing changes in their sleep, body image, or daily routine?
● Have these issues impacted their ability to connect with others, leading to increased conflict or withdrawal?
There is a lot of change and uncertainty involved in the transition from being a kid to being an
adult. It’s normal for teens to encounter challenges with anxiety, confidence, and decision-
making, which can complicate life at school and at home. As their parent, you may have noticed
that your teen is more easily distressed and unable to keep up with a healthy, balanced routine.
Mental health symptoms tend to have an impact on just about every aspect of teens’ lives from their academic performance to their relationships to how they feel in their bodies. If left unresolved, these symptoms can make everyday tasks increasingly difficult to manage.
Your teen may need a space in their lives where they can just be and not worry about the pressures or expectations of others. Therapy might be just that: an environment where your teen feels safe to open up, explore, and develop the skills needed to manage life’s challenges. Teens Don’t Always Know How To Cope Or Communicate, These Skills Must Be Learned

Being a teen has never been “easy.”
Whether we’d like to or not, we all remember those uniquely adolescent experiences of dreading school, being at odds with our parents, or fearing rejection by others. When additional stressors are added to the mix including financial concerns, divorce, and other changes in circumstance teens often feel even more overwhelmed than usual.
If all those changes weren’t enough to juggle already, today’s teens experience the unique challenge of growing up in our fast-paced, tech-centered world, where even more pressures are piled on. It’s easy to feel isolated when online interactions are prioritized over real-life connections, and many teens feel immense pressure to appear a certain way on social media. When combined, all of these stressors can lead to symptoms of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and relational obstacles. If Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is present, these symptoms can worsen focus and the ability to cope. But luckily, teen therapists are available to help.
How Does Counseling Benefit Teens?
Emotional intelligence and coping skills require time, practice, and a certain degree of life experience, so it makes sense when teens aren’t automatically able to handle stress effectively. These challenges often require the outside perspective and expertise of a counselor, and your teen is not alone if they need help. The transition into adulthood is one of the most consequential times in life, and all of us can use more skills and support when it feels like life is spinning out of control.
Our therapists are not here to pathologize or “change” your teen—they’re here to offer essential guidance on your child’s unique path to independence. As your teen develops achievable goals, they can improve their communication, emotional regulation, and problem-solving skills.
Welcome To The Lake Erie Center For Relationship Counseling, Where Your Teen Is Welcomed And Encouraged To Grow We work with teens of all backgrounds in therapy, including those who may be struggling with:
● Anxiety, stress, overwhelm, and perfectionism
● Academic challenges, including those associated with ADHD
● Depression and low self-esteem
● Identity-related concerns (i.e., LGBTQIA+ identities)
● Body image and/or achieving a healthy lifestyle
Our therapists incorporate aspects of deep breathing, grounding techniques, journaling, and mindfulness to help teens manage stress and anxiety. We also draw from other evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and The Gottman Method as it applies to teens to individualize the counseling experience for each client.
What To Expect
This is a client-centered process that trusts teens and allows them to lead the way.
Your perspective as a parent is essential and will be incorporated as appropriate. However, it’s important for teens to understand that therapy is a safe, confidential space, so the early parts of the counseling process will focus on establishing trust, building rapport, and going over privacy concerns. Throughout ongoing sessions, your teen’s therapist will guide them in exploring their emotions, thought patterns, behaviors, and ongoing stressors. These conversations are likely to cover everything from your child’s daily challenges to their highest-held values to their perceived strengths and weaknesses. These conversations will offer meaningful insight into your teen’s triggers what they are, how to recognize them, and how to cope with them without increasing stress or compromising relationships.
Given the right support and guidance, your teen can learn to manage emotions, overcome obstacles, and build confidence. With these improvements in place, you’re likely to notice healthier connections and increased resilience in your teen’s life. Small steps now will lead to big changes in the future, allowing them to discover and develop their strengths despite the challenges that life will continue to send their way.
Common Questions That Teens Have Before Starting Therapy
-
It’s really good for your therapist to know that you’re worried about this—it takes a lot of
courage to ask for help, yet we know that certain mental health issues can make it seem like
something is “wrong” with you. The truth is that going to a therapist signals real strength! It
shows that you are invested in yourself and building a happy, healthy future.
Our therapists create a counseling pace for all of our teen clients that feels manageable, never
going faster than what feels comfortable for you. If you have specific worries about therapy, we
invite you to discuss them honestly with your therapist.
-
This is a very common concern we hear from teens considering counseling, but we want to
assure you that our therapists create a safe, friendly, and interactive environment where you are
the expert on your life. We are trained to listen closely and take your worries seriously in a way
that allows you to feel heard. We also individualize this process to your unique needs so that our
sessions together feel productive.
All in all, we want this time to feel like yours and will do whatever is needed to help you feel seen and supported along the way.
-
Even as minors, teens still have the right to confidentiality in counseling—and we know this
process only works if you trust your therapist. For the most part, what you share in sessions is
private, and your parents would only be given a general overview of what occurred in therapy if
they ask. It’s important that you view counseling as a transparent and trustworthy process.
That said, there are some limits to confidentiality. Mainly, if you express a desire to hurt yourself
or someone else—or if something is disclosed that makes us concerned for your safety—we are
mandated to report. We will go over these policies with you when counseling begins.
