Looking For Therapy That Gets To The Core Of The Matter?
Unresolved trauma is disruptive. For some, it takes the form of muscle tightness, heart palpitations, and other physical sensations. For others, it leads to ongoing symptoms of depression and anxiety. While each person’s experience is unique, trauma has a way of making those who’ve survived it feel unsafe, overwhelmed, and disconnected.
Conventional talk therapy can be helpful in targeting symptoms of trauma, but many methods take weeks or months and require thorough verbal processing. If you’ve survived difficult circumstances or are battling disturbing thoughts and memories, you may not want to spend an indefinite period of time in therapy discussing sensitive topics.
Luckily, EMDR is safe, quick, effective, and available through The Lake Erie Center for Relationship Counseling.
What Is Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy?
EMDR is a somatic (body-based) therapy that taps into the present moment to help you explore the relationship between how you feel in your body and what you are thinking about as discomfort occurs. Using a technique called bilateral stimulation or side-to-side movement that stimulates both sides of the brain, EMDR seeks to calm the nervous system and reprocess disruptive memories.
Depending on the therapist, light cues, auditory cues, or tapping may be used to initiate bilateral stimulation. Then, throughout the phases of EMDR, your therapist will teach you grounding skills and other methods to calm your mind and body during treatment. As you focus on a distressing memory or belief, your therapist will repeat the eye movement phase as needed until acute symptoms are drastically reduced or resolved altogether. This process is relatively nonverbal, and traumatic memories are often neutralized in as few as 1 to 3 sessions.

EMDR Through The Lake Erie Center For Relationship Counseling
The concept of eye movement and desensitization therapy has been around since the 1980s, when EMDR was first introduced by the trauma specialist Francine Shapiro. Yet, as we have learned more and more about the effects of trauma on each person’s psychological, physical, and relational health over the years, EMDR’s popularity has been on the rise.
As therapists specializing in relational health and trauma, we are trained and certified in EMDR and other methods to help calm the nervous system in a meaningful, lasting way. EMDR is available as a telehealth therapy through our practice. We work with individual adults in treatment, and we find that our clients respond particularly well to EMDR’s fast-acting and relatively nonverbal approach.
Currently, our practice conducts EMDR sessions online via telehealth. Research has shown that EMDR is equally effective when done online as when done in person. And in fact, some of the bilateral stimulation technology we use is actually more effective online since we wouldn’t have the same tools available for in-person therapy.
Through this approach, you can develop awareness and a mind-body connection that facilitates healing. As you gain a better understanding of how disruptive thoughts and beliefs are affecting you deep within, you can begin to achieve new habits that promote wellness and day-to-day anxiety management. With EMDR, you can free yourself from the patterns and symptoms that trauma has trapped you in.
Is EMDR Still Effective When Done Online?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is available at The Lake Erie center for Relationship Counseling, offering clients both short- and long-term relief from anxiety, depression, relational issues, and other symptoms of unresolved trauma.
