In Gottman Method Couples Therapy, we talk a lot about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, four negative communication patterns that predict relationship distress and even divorce. Two of the most common culprits are: Criticism – When you attack your partner’s character instead of addressing a specific behavior. Defensiveness – When you respond to perceived attacks with excuses, blame-shifting, or victimhood.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Create a Time for Discussion Gottman suggests that when emotions run high, it’s sometimes better to schedule a time to talk about the issue when both partners can approach the conversation calmly.  Set aside time each week for a “relationship check-in” to discuss any concerns without feeling rushed or defensive.  This tactic goes a long way in reducing conflict build up and keeps the lines of communication open. One tool Gottman offers for this is the weekly State of the Union meeting, where couples connect to express appreciation, plan for fun, discuss the business of their household (schedules, appointments, chores, errands, etc), and bring up a complaint to discuss.  Couples who engage in the one hour meeting each week, report an increase in feelings of connection and partnership and an overall decrease in conflict.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Have you noticed changes in your sexual intimacy over time? It’s normal for intimacy to evolve, but navigating those changes can sometimes feel challenging.  Usually sex isn’t an issue at the start of a relationship.  As time goes on, often, sexual frequency and intensity tends to go down. Sexual intimacy in relationships is often impacted by emotional connection, stress, and life changes.  Couples often report intimacy getting off track following a death in the family, birth of a child, increased conflict in the relationship or when there is high work stress.  These are just a few examples.  Lack of quality time and communication can also result in less intimacy.  The less connected we feel, the more distant we tend to be, and then intimacy begins to feel more like a chore than a desire to be close to one another. The Gottman Method provides research-backed strategies for managing changes in sexual intimacy and maintaining a deep connection with your partner.  This includes learning how to talk to each other about how we are feeling and assuming the best of our partner.  Even if our libidos are low when stress is high, we can change the way we talk about the changes and stop blaming our partner’s biology.  It necessitates letting go of the stories we tell ourselves, like “he just wants sex” or “she doesn't desire me anymore.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Trust Isn't Set-and-Forget It                              A Gottman Couples Guide - I come home from work looking stressed and exhausted. My partner is busy getting dinner ready. They can put down what they are doing and show concern for my mood, or they can keep busy with cutting vegetables. They can choose to take a moment to prioritize me and our relationship or keep preparing dinner. That’s what Dr. John Gottman calls a sliding door moment - a moment of decision that occurs during daily activity. One missed opportunity to connect won’t ruin the relationship, however, over time, if turning away becomes the norm, the relationship suffers. Gottman’s research shows trust is not a one-time achievement; it’s an ongoing process.  The previously mentioned sliding door moments are opportunities to say to our partner, “I’m here for you.  I see you.  You’re important to me.”  This isn’t only communicated in words, but also in actions. Gottman calls choosing to be curious about our partner or offering a connecting response in these moments “Turning Toward” your partner. “Turning Toward” increases feelings of trust. When our partner dismisses us or turns away from us in these moments, trust feels diminished.</image:title>
